Why Two Hijri Converters Give Different Dates
If you have ever converted the same Hijri date twice and got two answers, nothing was broken. There are several Hijri calendars in use, they disagree by about a day, and the day they disagree on is usually the one that matters. This explains which is which, when the difference bites, and why no offset fixes it.
Three calendars, not one
A Hijri month begins when the new crescent is first seen. Seeing is local and depends on weather, so a purely observational calendar cannot be printed in advance — and printing one is exactly what a government, a payroll system and an airline all need.
So several calculated calendars exist. Umm al-Qura is the one Saudi Arabia uses officially, and it is computed from astronomical criteria for Mecca. The tabular calendar is pure arithmetic: a fixed thirty-year cycle with eleven leap years, no astronomy at all. The civil variant is the same arithmetic with a different starting point.
Each is internally consistent. None is wrong. They simply answer slightly different questions, and a converter that does not say which one it used has given you a number without telling you what it means.
The gap is one day — and it moves
Across 1448 the three calendars sit within a day of each other on every major observance. That sounds harmless until you notice which day.
Muharram 1448 begins on 16 June 2026 by Umm al-Qura and by the tabular calendar, but 17 June by the civil one. Ramadan 1448 begins on 8 February 2027 by Umm al-Qura and the civil calendar, but 7 February by the tabular one.
Read those twice. In the first case the civil calendar is a day late; in the second the tabular one is a day early. The disagreement does not point the same way from month to month, which is why the obvious workaround — pick a calendar, apply a fixed offset — does not work. There is no constant to add.
When one day matters
For a contract date or a birth certificate it usually does not. For everything seasonal it does.
Ramadan starting a day early moves the first fast. Eid moving by a day moves a public holiday, which moves flights, staffing rotas and school terms. In Gulf payroll, a month boundary that shifts by a day can move an end-of-service calculation into a different period.
This is the practical reason to know which calendar a system is using: not because one is more correct, but because two systems using different ones will quietly disagree about when something happened.
Using a converter properly
Three things to check before you trust a converted date.
First, find out which calendar it used. If the page does not say, treat the answer as approximate. Second, if the date is near the start or end of a month, expect a day of uncertainty and say so when you pass it on. Third, if the date is going into a system that someone else will read back — a contract, a database, a schedule — record the Gregorian date as well, so the ambiguity is resolved once rather than every time it is read.
The converter here shows Umm al-Qura by default because that is what Saudi Arabia uses officially, and the reference table shows all three side by side so you can see the gap rather than take it on trust.
Common questions
Which Hijri calendar should I use?
Umm al-Qura if your date concerns Saudi Arabia, because it is the official one there and what government systems use. The tabular calendar is common in software because it needs no astronomical data. If you are converting a date somebody else produced, the right answer is whichever one they used.
Why did two websites give me different dates?
Almost certainly because they use different Hijri calendars, and most do not say which. The difference is usually one day. It is not a bug in either of them.
Can I just add or subtract a day to convert between them?
No, and this is the trap. The direction of the difference changes from month to month — in 1448 the civil calendar runs a day late at Muharram and the tabular one runs a day early at Ramadan. There is no fixed offset to apply.

No. Umm al-Qura is calculated and printed years in advance, but the start of Ramadan and the date of Eid are announced after a moon sighting and can fall a day either side of the printed date. Use the printed date to plan and the announcement to observe.
Does the Hijri year always have 354 days?
Not exactly. A lunar year is about 354.37 days, so calendars insert a leap day on a cycle — the tabular calendar uses eleven leap years in thirty. That is why Hijri dates drift against Gregorian ones by roughly eleven days a year rather than a constant amount.
